Hart’s arbitration hearing scheduled; UK baseball previews

Before we get to today’s links I have one administrative note to pass along. A commenter on a previous post brought up the distinction between being born in a state and living there (i.e. Dan Uggla, Mark Reynolds, Aaron Cook). I’ve been struggling with this since starting the site, but now will officially make a distinction by only referring to these players as being born in a specific city, not a native of that city.

  • Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports Bowling Green-native Corey Hart’s arbitration hearing with the Brewers has been scheduled for Thursday in Tampa, Fl. The two sides are $650,000 apart in their exchanged salary proposals.
  • University of Kentucky head coach Gary Henderson previews the season for SECSports.com.
  • The Web site also has an in-depth preview of the team.
  • Eric Mack of CBSSports.com looks at the 2010 Cincinnati Reds fantasy prospects including a host of former Louisville Bats.
  • UK Baseball SID Brent Ingram tweeted the Cats have announced two televised games with five more on the way.

BA picks Louisville to win the Big East; Four to All-Conference team

Baseball America today selected the University of Louisville as its preseason Big East Conference favorites. The rankings were part of the magazine’s region-by-region 2010 NCAA baseball preview. In addition to being selected as preseason favorites, UofL also boasts for members of the preseason All-Big East team. First baseman Andrew Clark, outfielder Josh Richmond, designated hitter Phil Wunderlich and starting pitcher Thomas Royce headline the team. The four Cardinals were the most players from any school selected to the roster.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Matt Koch ranked second on the top newcomers list, and Richmond, Royce, outfielder Stewart IJames and Clark were included on the top 2010 draft prospects list for the conference. Right-handed pitcher Tony Zych, shortstop Ryan Wright, right-handed pitcher Derek Self and left-handed pitcher Keith Landers were selected as top 2011 draft prospects.

Giants, Rockies, Mets interested in Wellemeyer; Reynolds talks long-term deal with D’Backs

Todd Wellemeyer; Photo from Wikimedia Commons

Louisville-native Todd Wellemeyer appears to have merged from Hot Stove league exile with some possible destinations finally surfacing. Check out those possibilities plus a possible long-term contract for one Bluegrass pre-arbitration player:

  • Tracy Ringolsby of Foxsports.com reports the Rockies have targeted Bellarmine alum Todd Wellemeyer in their search to add pitching depth.
  • Troy Renck of the Denver Post writes the Giants are the favorites to sign Wellemeyer, and the Rockies are interested in a minor league deal.
  • Tim McKernan of 1380 AM in tweets the Mets are also in the picture.
  • Nick Piecoro reports the Diamondbacks and Pikeville-native Mark Reynolds have started negotiations for a long-term contract.
  • Piecoro also reports Ashland-native Brandon Webb has a bullpen session scheduled for Tuesday.
  • In the same buzz blog post, Ken Rosenthal writes the Blue Jays may flip University of Kentucky alum Scott Downs for prospects.
  • Debbie Harbsmeier of WHAS reports from UofL’s first two spring scrimmages.

PRP alum named first-team All-American; UK infielder selected as third-team AA

Zack Cox; University of Arkansas photo

Pleasure Ridge Park alum and University of Arkansas infielder Zack Cox was named a first-team NCAA All-American by Baseball America Friday. The team was voted on by MLB scouting directors. Cox graduated from PRP in 2008 before starring for the Razorbacks as a freshman in 2009.  BA selected Cox as the designated hitter on the first team after he batted .271 with 12 home runs and 36 RBI last year.

“We really like his bat,” a National League scouting director told Jim Callis of BA. “We liked it in high school, too. He should hit for average and power. He backspins the ball pretty well. And he should be OK at third base, too, once he gets some more time there.” (Read more, subscription required)

University of Kentucky second baseman Chris Bisson was named to the third-team squad after batting .360 with two home runs and 52 RBI in 2009. (BA All Americans)

Bertram highlights Legends caravan stop

Michael Bertram; Photo by mwlguide via Flickr

The Lexington Legends winter caravan made its stop in Lexington today, and several current Kentucky minor leaguers made appearances at the event. A class conflict kept me away from the event, but Mark Maloney of the Lexington Herald-Leader was there to talk to University of Kentucky alums Michael Bertram and John Shelby III. along with Lexington-natives Ben Revere, Chaz Roe and Robbie Ross. Maloney has an excellent writeup of Bertram’s rise through the Detroit Tigers system last season you should check out. Too often we get caught up about prospect status when following the minor leagues, but Bertram is an excellent example of a “organizational player” who hasn’t let any of his low prospect rankings affect his play as he pursues his dream. Yahoo! Sports previews the Ohio Valley Conference

While the Southeastern Conference and Big East Conference get the most headlines in our state, there is only one division one conference with three state teams: the Ohio Valley. Kendall Rogers of Yahoo! Sports has released his OVC 2010 preview and it’s littered with Kentucky teams and players. Rogers picks Murray State to finish second, Morehead State to finish third and Eastern Kentucky University to finish eighth of nine teams in 2010. (Read more)

Rogers also gives us his All-OVC team. I’ve included the Kentucky players below:

  • 1B Wes Cunningham — Murray State
  • 2B Jonathan Craycraft — Murray State
  • SS Drew Lee — Morehead State
  • 3B Jayson Langfels — EKU
  • OF Daniel Hill — Murray State
  • OF J. D. Ashbrook — Morhead State
  • SP Chris Craycraft — Murray State
  • OVC Best Hitter — SS Drew Lee — Morehead State

Downs may be headed out of Toronto; Wellemeyer still looking for work

Scott Downs; Photo from Wikimedia Commons

The Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to a deal with free agent reliever Kevin Gregg, leading Bob Elliot of the Toronto Sun to speculate University of Kentucky alum Scott Downs may be on his way out of Toronto. Downs has been mentioned in trade discussions throughout the offseason, including one rumor connecting him with his original team the Chicago Cubs. Downs has been one of the best left-handed relievers over the past three seasons with ERAs of 2.17, 1.78 and 3.09. (Read more)

While Downs may soon have a new team, Bellarmine alum Todd Wellemeyer would probably take any offer at the moment. Wellemeyer’s name has been conspicuously absent from the rumor mill this offseason, but yesterday Tim Dierkes of MLBTradeRumors.com reported the Phillies, Diamondbacks and Rockies have expressed interest at various times. Wellemeyer prefers to remain a starting pitcher, but he may have to take a minor league deal after an abysmal 2009. (Read more)
