Morehead State University withheld a late rally from Mercer to escape its season opener with a 7-6 victory. The Eagles jumped out to a 7-3 lead after five innings. Morehead was led by preseason All-American senior shortstop Drew Lee who slugged his first home run of the season. Sophomore catcher Taylor Davis added three hits, and senior outfielder J. D. Ashbrook and senior pitcher/designated hitter Michael Bottoms added two hits each.
Bottoms also earned his first win of the season after allowing four runs in six innings. Freshman reliever Cody Gibson earned the save in his collegiate debut after allowing one run in one and one-third innings. (Box Score)
