The University of Louisville clinched its first series victory of 2010 with a 5-2 win over Bowling Green State University Saturday. The Cards were led on the mound by junior left-handed pitcher Dean Kiekhefer who started the game with five innings of one-run ball. Kiekhefer allowed two hits and one uneared run while striking out four and walking one. Sophomore right-handed reliever Derek Self picked up the win in relief after allowing one unearned run in three innings. Junior closer Gabriel Shaw earned his first save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.
At the plate, UofL was led by senior catcher Jeff Arnold who was 2-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore shortstop Ryan Wright and freshman designated hitter Kyle Grieshaber each drove in a run for UofL. Box Score)
Note: UofL has moved Sunday’s game to this afternoon due to inclement weather forecasts for tomorrow.
BluGrass Baseball POG: Dean Kiekhefer — The Oldham County graduate made short work of Bowling Green by allowing only three baserunners in five innings. The bullpen deserves equal credit for the victory, and the UofL pitching staff only has one walk in two games this season. If the Cards continues to get pitching like this a return trip to the NCAA regionals looks well within its reach.
