EKU evens series with 10-8 win over Presbyterian

Eastern Kentucky University evened its series against Presbyterian at one win a piece and moved to 3-3 on the season with a 10-8 victory Saturday. The Colonels were paced by freshman second baseman Matt Phipps, who was 3-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in his first career start. Senior first baseman Anthony Ottrando launched his fifth home run on the young season, and junior third baseman Jayson Langfels was 2-5 with one RBI and two runs scored.

Junior right-handed pitcher Stephen Hefler earned the victory in his first start of the season. Hefler allowed three runs on four hits in five innings and struck out two while walking three. Sophomore catcher A. J. Jamison also drove in two runs for the Colonels. Junior right-handed reliever Ryne Purcell earned his second save of the season by recording the last out in the ninth. BluGrass Baseball POG: Matt Phipps — Phipps made a case for more playing time with a 3-4, one home run, two RBI, two runs scored performance in his first career start. Phipps had scored two runs on the season without an official at-bat.
