BluGrass Baseball Saturday Review: Week Eight

Saturday was a busy day for baseball in the Bluegrass as each of the three Ohio Valley Conference teams played a double-header, and the three teams ranked at some point this season were locked in important conference battles. The news was good for several Kentucky colleges, but not so good for a few others. Check out recaps and awards from Saturday’s games below:

  • The University of Louisville (9) was blown out 15-5 by Pittsburgh to hand the Cards their first weekend series loss of the season. Senior slugger Phil Wunderlich and freshman third baseman Cade Stallings each tallied two hits, but usually steady junior left-handed starting pitcher Dean Kiekhefer allowed seven runs in three innings for the loss.   • Western Kentucky University head coach Chris Finwood tallied his 200th career victory in a series-clinching 12-4 win over South Alabama Saturday. The Hilltoppers were led by senior shortstop Matt Payton, who was 3-5 with a double, triple, three RBI and three runs scored. Senior right-handed pitcher Shane Cameron earned the win after allowing four runs in six innings. (Box Score)
  • Freshman left-handed pitcher Taylor Rogers led the University of Kentucky to its first Southeastern Conference series victory of the season with an 8-2 win over Alabama Saturday. Rogers allowed two runs on five hits and struck out five while walking none in seven and two-third innings. Senior center fielder Keenan Wiley and junior shortstop Taylor Rogers each tallied three hits in the game. (Box Score)
  • Murray State University split a double-header Saturday against Jacksonville State with a 7-3 loss in game one and a 9-3 win in game two. Redshirt junior left-handed pitcher Jake Donze earned the win in game two after allowing three runs on four hits in seven innings. Senior first baseman Wes Cunningham and senior designated hitter Bryan Propst each had a three-hit game on the afternoon. (Box Score GM 1) (Box Score GM 2)
  • Eastern Kentucky University swept a double-header from Austin Peay Saturday with a 10-1 win in game one and an 8-4 win in game two. Junior third baseman Jayson Langfels was 3-4 with a double, triple, four RBI, four runs scored and a walk on the day. Junior right-handed pitcher Shane Hefler earned the game one win after allowing one run in seven innings, and junior left-handed pitcher Paul Duncan tallied the game-two win after allowing four runs in six and two third innings.   • Morehead State University split a double-header against Eastern Illinois with a 6-2 win in game one and a 14-0 loss in game two. Senior right-handed pitcher Michael Bottoms earned the win in game one after allowing just two runs in nine innings. Sophomore outfielder Cameron Flynn was 3-5 on the afternoon.
