It’s time for the Week three weekend preview. Check out storylines to watch in week four games for Kentucky colleges:
Matchup of the week : University of Louisville @ Pepperdine
With most of the Kentucky colleges either finishing or starting spring break, the weekend slate of Kentucky games features the weakest group of opponents thus far in the 2011 season. The highlight of the uninspiring group of weekend series is highlighted by UofL’s west-coast trip to Pepperdine. The Waves are 5-6 on the season but are just 2-6 since the team’s opening-weekend sweep of Eastern Kentucky University. Pepperdine sophomore right-handed pitcher Jon Moscot struck out 10 batters in his first start versus EKU and is 0-0 with a 3.44 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 18 and one-third innings this season.
Player to watch: LHP Tanner Perkins (WKU)
Western Kentucky University sophomore left-handed pitcher Tanner Perkins was outstanding in his first two starts of the 2011 season, but struggle last week versus College of Charleston. Perkins surrendered seven runs, four of which were earned, on eight hits in four and one-third innings last week but is 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA in three starts this season. He was originally scheduled to start on Tuesday versus Ole Miss, but the game was rained out. Perkins will likely start on Friday versus Illinois, and his appearance could go a long way to determining if he can be the WKU ace for the rest of the season.
Stat of the week: RHP Trevor Gott (UK)
University of Kentucky freshman right-handed pitcher Trevor Gott has been a valuable weapon out of the Cats’ bullpen during the young 2011 season but boasts one of the strangest season pitching line you will ever see. Gott is 1-1 with 13 strikeouts and six walks in nine innings this season. The freshman has one save and has yet to give up an earned run on the season. However Gott has surrendered an astounding nine unearned runs this year. On Wednesday he surrendered five unearned runs in a loss after his own fielding error prolonged an inning.
Out of state Kentuckians to watch: RHP Chad Martin (Indiana), SS Zach Osborne (Tennessee)
PLD alum Chad Martin has note recorded a decision in five appearances this season but boasts a 1.20 ERA for Indiana. In his first start last weekend Martin pitched well against Morehead St. but had to settle for a no decision. In 15 innings pitched Martin has 16 strikeouts and five walks…PRP alum Zach Osborne started the 2011 season slowly but a hot spurt has raised his average to .364 on the season. Osborne has just two extra-base hits on the season but has scored eight runs and stolen two bases in two attempts.
