Lexington native and Cleveland Indians outfielder Austin Kearns was arrested on Feb. 12 in Jessamine County on charges of driving under the influence, Jonathan Kleppinger of The Jessamine Journal reports. Kearns was pulled over by an off-duty Lexington police officer, who said Kearns was “flashing his headlights and weaving on U.S. 68.” Kearns refused field sobriety tests and according to the police report told Jessamine County sheriff’s deputy Todd Sponcil that he was a professional baseball player and asked if Sponcil could “cut him a break,” Kleppinger writes. Kearns, who has a court date set for March 10 in Jessamine County but will be represented by his attorney there, was “very unsteady on his feet” according to the police report. (Read more)

The Indians were not aware of Kearns’ arrest until the Journal’s report. Kearns told the Associated Press that he had not told the Indians about the arrest on “advice I was given. They know what’s going on and we’ll go from there,” Kearns said. Following the Journal’s report Kearns met with Indians manager Manny Acta and general manager Chris Antonetti. Kearns signed with the Indians as a free agent in December. He spent the first half of 2010 in Cleveland before the team traded him to the Yankees on July 30. (Read more)
