Murray State capitalizes on six UK errors in 7-5 win

College Baseball

The University of Kentucky committed six errors in its Monday afternoon game, and Murray State University capitalized on the miscues to post a 7-5 victory over UK. Murray State senior first baseman Wes Cunningham launched a three-run home run in the third inning to give the Breds a 4-1 lead. Murray added three more runs in the fourth inning, and UK tried to mount a late inning rally but couldn’t finish the job despite solo home runs from sophomore left fielder Chad Wright and senior infielder Gunner Glad.

Senior right-handed pitcher Dan Huff earned the victory for Murray State after allowing four runs, three of which were earned, on 10 hits in eight innings. Murray State ace and former UK pitcher Chris Craycraft finished the ninth inning for his first career save. UK freshman right-handed pitcher Sam Kidd took the loss after allowing seven runs, five of which were earned, in three and one-third innings.

UK All-American second baseman Chris Bisson returned from injury with a pinch hit appearance in the ninth inning. While UK committed six errors in the game, Murray State had only one and featured several “Web Gem” caliber defensive plays including a couple from freshman shortstop Brandon Elliott. (Box Score)

BluGrass Baseball POG: Wes Cunningham — The Murray St. senior first baseman was 3-5 with a home run, four RBI and one run scored in the game. His third inning blast gave the Breds a lead they would never relent. On the season Cunningham is batting .420 with six home runs, 21 RBI and 16 runs scored.

Murray St. drops sixth straight with 12-3 loss Sunday

College Baseball

Northwestern State finished a three-game sweep of Murray State University Sunday with a 12-3 victory. The loss was the Racers’ sixth in a row and dropped Murray to 4-6 on the season. Just three Racers record a hit in the game, and only one Murray State player drove in a run. Senior right-handed pitcher Dan Huff took the loss after allowing seven runs in four and two-third innings. (Box Score)

BluGrass Baseball POG: Matt McGaha — The Racers had almost no luck on offense Sunday, and three of the four pitchers in the game gave up at least two runs. McGaha was the lone exception. He held Northwestern State hitless for two and one-third innings and struck out one.

Murray comeback falls shorts as Racers drop third straight

College Baseball

Murray State University put the possible game winning run on base in the ninth inning Tuesday, but couldn’t bring it home and instead lost its third straight game. Belmont University used a two-run ninth inning to stretch a one-run lead to an 8-6 victory over the Racers. Murray State was led by senior first baseman Wes Cunningham, who was 2-4 with an RBI. Junior left fielder Zach Noonan and freshman shortstop Brandon Elliott both drove in two runs for the Racers.

On the mound, senior right-handed pitcher Dan Huff took the loss after surrendering six runs, three of which were earned, in six innings. Murray State fell to 4-3 on the season and has lost three straight after winning its first four games of 2010. (Box Score)

BluGrass Baseball POG: Wes Cunningham — No one player really stood out with his performance for Murray State Tuesday, but Cunningham earns the player of the game honors for being the only Racer to record multiple hits. Cunningham was 2-4 with an RBI and a walk in the game and now is batting .438 with two home runs and seven RBI on the year.
