Cats, Cards move up in Rivals rankings; UofL and EKU players earn weekly conference honors

Several afternoon notes and honors for Kentucky collegiate players to pass along:

    The University of Louisville moved up to No. 8 and UK broke into the latest Rivals.com rankings at No. 22 this week.

  • University of Louisville right-handed pitcher Thomas Royse was named the Big East pitcher of the week after a six-shutout inning performance  in the Big East/Big Ten Challenge.
  • UofL first baseman Andrew Clark was also named to the Big East honor roll for the week.

    Eastern Kentucky University first baseman Anthony Ottrando was named the Ohio Valley Conference player of the week after launching four home runs against Western Carolina.

  • Pleasure Ridge Park alum Zack Cox is now batting .409 with one home run and nine RBI for Arkansas.
  • Boyle County grad Patrick Cooper surrendered six runs in the first inning of his season debut Saturday for Bradley.
  • Lexington Catholic alum Nick Maronde has surrendered six runs in two and one-third innings for Florida this season.

The University of Kentucky has released its 2010 baseball schedule, and the Cats will face the usual daunting Southeastern Conference slate. “The conference is going to be extremely competitive again,” UK Head Coach Gary Henderson said in a news release. “We are going to have as many returning players as ever in the league. When you look at the rosters and stats from around the conference, there is no weak team. It is going to be a great challenge from week to week. It is an absolute grind, 10 weeks of tremendous competition in great environments for college baseball.”

UK Nabs Sixth Ranked Recruiting Class

The 2010 UK baseball newcomers have been ranked the sixth best recruiting class in the country by Collegiate Baseball. According to a news release from UK Athletics, the Cats ranked behind Florida (1) and LSU (3) among SEC teams. UofL ranked 28th on the list.

The 13-man class is headlined by five 2009 MLB draft picks including RHP Jordan Cooper, the top-ranked high school pitching prospect in Tennessee according to Baseball America, and catcher Luke Maile, the top high school prospect from Kentucky. Outfielders Sam Kidd and Brian Adams (a football signee) and LHP Taylor Rogers were also selected in the 2009 draft. UK will welcome four transfers to campus, including 2008 freshman All-American shortstop Taylor Back, who previously played at Charleston Southern. (Read more)
