  • Western Kentucky University held off a late rally from Florida Atlantic to preserve a 5-4 win and clinch the series victory. Redshirt senior right-handed pitcher Brian Edelen earned the win after surrendering two runs on four hits in five innings of relief while striking out seven batters and walking none. Freshman first baseman Jordan Cessna was 2-3 with one walk and two runs scored in a rare start, and junior second baseman Ivan Hartle was 2-3 with two RBI and one run scored. (Box Score)
  • The University of Kentucky bullpen fell apart again, surrendering three runs with two outs in the ninth inning in a 6-3 loss to Vanderbilt. The loss officially eliminated UK from Southeastern Conference tournament contention. Junior left-handed pitcher Alex Phillips took the loss after surrendering two runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Jordan Cooper surrendered three runs on five hits in six innings while striking out five batters and walking six in his return to the weekend rotation.   • Eastern Kentucky University finished a three-game sweep of Murray State University with a 5-1 win Sunday. Junior left-handed pitcher Greg Terry earned the win after surrendering one run on four hits in five and two-third innings while striking out two batters and walking one. Junior shortstop Richie Rodriguez was 3-5 with one run scored, and sophomore center fielder Austin Grisham slugged his second home run of the season. Junior right-handed pitcher Matt Fyffe earned his first save with three and one-third scoreless innings of relief. No Murray St. batter recorded multiple hits in the game.   • UT Martin scored four runs after the sixth inning to send Morehead State University to a 9-8 loss. Redshirt junior right-handed pitcher Matt Cartwright took the loss after surrendering one run without recording an out. Junior center fielder Andrew Deeds was 3-4 with one double, one triple, three RBI and one run scored while setting the school single-season and career triples records.   • Eastern Kentucky University scored a run in the bottom of the 11th inning on a wild pitch to earn a 5-4 win over Western Kentucky University. EKU freshman infielder Alex Arovits, who entered the game as a pinch runner in the ninth inning, scored the tying and winning runs. EKU sophomore right-handed pitcher Anthony Bazzani earned his first win of the season after posting a scoreless inning of relief. WKU junior right-handed pitcher Phil Wetherell took the loss after surrendering one run on one hit in two and one-third innings. EKU freshman third baseman Bryan Soloman was 2-5 with one double, one RBI and one run scored. WKU junior center fielder Kes Carter was 3-4 with one walk, one RBI and one run scored. (Box Score)
  • The University of Louisville surrendered six runs in the third inning in a 6-2 loss to Eastern Michigan.   • The University of Kentucky scored six runs in the first inning and rode a strong start from sophomore right-handed pitcher Jordan Cooper to a 15-2 win over Xavier. Cooper, who was making his first start since being demoted from the weekend rotation, earned the win after surrendering two runs on six hits in five innings while striking out six batters and walking none. Junior third baseman Thomas McCarthy was 2-4 with one home run, five RBI and three runs scored, and junior designated hitter Braden Kapteyn was 3-5 with one RBI and four runs scored. Sophomore first baseman Luke Maile slugged a grand slam, and sophomore center fielder Brian Adams added a home run. (Box Score)
  • Eastern Kentucky University scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 9-6 win over Marshall.   • The University of Louisville dropped its second game in a row to Southern California with a 9-4 loss on Wednesday. Freshman right-handed pitcher Dace Kime took the loss after surrendering five runs on three hits in two innings while striking out one batter and walking four. The Cards did find some rare power with home runs from redshirt junior right fielder Stewart Ijames and sophomore first baseman Zak Wasserman. The team had just three home runs entering the game with two of those belonging to preseason All-American Ryan Wright. Junior right-handed pitcher Derek Self kept the Cards in the game by surrendering one run in three innings of relief. (Box Score)
  • In game one of a double-header Eastern Kentucky University surrendered seven runs in the first two innings and could not overcome the early deficit in an 8-5 loss to West Virginia. Senior left-handed pitcher Paul Duncan took the loss after surrendering six runs on seven hits in one and one-third innings. Sophomore first baseman Matt Phipps was the only Colonel batter to record multiple hits in the game, finishing 2-3 with two doubles, two RBI and one run scored.   • In game two EKU left nine men on base in an 11-2 loss to WVU. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Anthony Bazzani took the loss after surrendering nine runs, seven of which were earned on eight hits in three and one-third innings. Junior shortstop Richie Rodriguez and sophomore outfielder Austin Grisham were both 2-5, and freshman third baseman Bryan Soloman slugged his second home run of the season.   • Eastern Kentucky University freshman third baseman Bryan Soloman continued the Tuesday’s string of strong freshman performances with a five-hit game to lead the Colonels to a 12-8 win over Western Carolina. Soloman was 5-6 with one home run, one double, three RBI, four runs scored and one stolen base in the game. EKU junior shortstop Richie Rodriguez was 3-5 with three runs scored in the game. Junior left-handed pitcher Greg Terry was credited with the win after he recorded the final out in the sixth inning. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Alex Rexroat recorded the final four outs of the game for his first save. (Box Score)
  • Vanderbilt tied the game on a bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning before scoring the winning run on a wild pitch in a 6-5 walk-off win over Western Kentucky University. Following the bases-loaded walk from WKU redshirt junior closer Rye Davis that scored the tying run, senior catcher Matt Rice was ejected from the game for arguing the call. Sophomore infielder and catcher J. P. Jackson replaced Rice behind the plate but could not corral Davis’ wild pitch, which allowed the winning run to score. WKU junior outfielder Kes Carter was 2-4 with one run scored, and junior second baseman Ivan Hartle was 2-4 with one RBI in the game. Following the completion of the “offseason position battle” series we will post a lineup project for each of the five division one schools this week. The lineups are based on the position battle posts and are a my projection with a little background research of what the Opening Day lineup might look like. Note that while some positions were not included in the offseason battle series because they had an incumbent starter those starters can still change. We will also include weekend rotations, midweek starters and closers for good measure. We are moving in reverse order of 2010 records and will look at Eastern Kentucky University today.

Recaps from a busy Saturday of baseball in the Bluegrass:

  • No. 9 University of Louisville wasted an excellent start from freshman right-handed pitcher Matt Koch in a 2-1 loss to Georgetown in 10 innings. Koch allowed one run on three hits in eight innings and struck out six batters while walking just one. The Cards managed just four hits in the game and scored their only run on a fourth-inning home run from sophomore shortstop Ryan Wright. Previous Saturday starting pitcher Dean Kiekhefer took the loss after allowing a run in the tenth. (Box Score)
  • Western Kentucky University fell just short of its second straight ninth inning, come-from-behind win in a 8-6, 10-inning loss to UALR. Senior second baseman Matt Payton and sophomore shortstop Logan Robbins each tallied three hits in the game. Redshirt sophomore closer Rye Davis took the loss after allowing two runs in the tenth inning. (Box Score)
  • Freshman right-handed pitcher Jordan Cooper led the University of Kentucky to a must-win 2-1 victory against No. 6 South Carolina. Cooper allowed one run on four hits in six and two-third innings while striking out five and walking just two. Sophomore designated hitter Braden Kapteyn gave UK the lead with a two-run double in the fifth inning.   • Murray State University moved into first place in the Ohio Valley conference after sweeping a doubleheader from Eastern Kentucky University with a 8-1 win in game one and a 9-6 win in game two. Breds senior first baseman Wes Cunningham tallied five hits, a home run and six RBI on the day. Senior right-handed pitcher Chris Craycraft earned the victory in game one with a complete-game performance. He struck out eight and walked one.   • Morehead State University was swept in its Saturday doubleheader by UT Martin with a 10-9 loss in game one and a 17-8 loss in game two. Senior shortstop Drew Lee was 4-6 on the afternoon, and sophomore catcher Taylor Davis launched two home runs in game two.
