During a week when Kentucky DI teams went just 8-15 and accumulated just three wins against teams outside the state, there were still plenty of standout individual performances. Check out the week nine award winners below:

Recaps and highlights from Friday Kentucky college baseball action:

  • The University of Louisville plated just two early runs and had a rare poor weekend start in an 8-2 loss to St. John’s. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Matt Koch took the loss after surrendering eight runs, four of which were earned, on 11 hits in four innings while striking out three batters and walking two. Sophomore first baseman Zak Wasserman was 2-2 with one walk, and freshman center fielder Cole Sturgeon was 2-4 with one run scored. Freshman infielder Ty Young reached base three times, drove in one run and scored once. (Box Score)
  • Western Kentucky University‘s series-opening game versus Arkansas St. was suspended in the top of the 13th inning with a 1-1 tie. The game had been previously delayed for 90 minutes due to rain. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Tanner Perkins pitched well in his start, surrendering one run on six hits in six and two-third innings while striking out five batters and walking three. WKU had just three hits through 12 innings. The game will resume at 3 p.m. Saturday, and game two of the series will begin 30 minutes after the end of game one. (Live Stats)
  • The University of Kentucky dropped its tenth consecutive Southeastern Conference game with a 3-2 loss to Mississippi. The Cats carried a 1-1 tie into the eighth inning, but Ole Miss scored two runs off junior right-handed pitcher Alex Meyer to take 3-1 lead. The Cats scored one run in the ninth inning and put the tying run on second base, but senior shortstop Taylor Black flew out to center field to end the game. Meyer took the loss after surrendering three runs, two of which were earned, in seven-plus innings while striking out seven batters and walking three.   • The University of Louisville rode a quality start from sophomore right-handed pitcher Matt Koch to a 7-4 win over Cincinnati in game one of a three-game series. Koch surrendered three runs on eight hits in seven innings while striking out seven batters and walking one. Freshman outfielder Cole Sturgeon was 2-4 with three runs scored in the leadoff hole, and freshman third baseman Ty Young drove in three runs. Junior right-handed pitcher Tony Zych pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his eighth save of the season. (Box Score)
  • Western Kentucky University recorded a 5-1 win over Louisiana-Lafayette behind a complete-game effort from freshman right-handed pitcher Justin Hageman. Senior catcher Matt Rice and junior center fielder Kes Carter were both 2-4 with one home run, one RBI and two runs scored. Hageman surrendered one run on eight hits in nine innings while striking out 10 batters and walking one. Junior second baseman Ivan Hartle scored the Hilltoppers other run, and junior right fielder Ryan Hutchinson, junior shortstop Logan Robbins and senior designated hitter Chris Bullard each tallied RBI.   • The University of Kentucky lost its seventh consecutive Southeastern Conference game with a 12-9 loss to Auburn. Auburn entered the eighth inning down one run but scored six runs in the frame to blow the game open. Redshirt senior right-handed pitcher Nick Kennedy took the loss after the only batter he faced reached base on a single and later scored the go-ahead run. Junior designated hitter Braden Kapteyn was 3-4 with one home run, four RBI and three runs scored. Freshman second baseman J. T.   • Senior designated hitter Chris Bullard drove in five runs and sophomore left-handed pitcher Tanner Perkins pitched seven shutout innings to lead Western Kentucky University to a 14-3 win over UALR. Perkins improved to 6-1 on the season after surrendering just four hits in seven innings while striking out eight batters and walking one. Bullard was 2-4 with one home run, five RBI and two runs scored.   • West Virginia used five unearned runs to send the University of Louisville to a 9-2 loss in game one of a three-game series. UofL sophomore right-handed pitcher Matt Koch took the loss after surrendering five runs, only one of which was earned, on seven hits in five and one-third innings while striking out two batter and walking two. Freshman third baseman Ty Young, junior second baseman Ryan Wright and senior catcher J. J. Ethel each had two hits in the game.   • A complete-game effort from junior right-handed pitcher Alex Meyer wasn’t enough for the University of Kentucky to avoid a 3-1 loss to No. 3 South Carolina in game one of its three-game series. Meyer fell to 3-4 on the season after surrendering three runs on six hits in eight innings while striking out eight batters and walking five. The Cats tallied just three hits against USC ace Michael Roth, and no UK batter had multiple hits in the game. UK scored its only run on a RBI single in the third innings from junior left fielder Chad Wright that scored junior catcher Michael Williams. (Box Score)
  • SIU Edwardsville scored eight runs through the first three innings and piled on from there to send Morehead State University to a 14-5 loss. Senior right-handed pitcher Trey Smith took the loss after surrendering seven runs, five of which were earned, on six hits in two and two-third innings. Junior third baseman Andrew Deeds was 2-2 with a double, one RBI, one run scored and two walks, and senior second baseman Travis Redmon slugged his third home run of the season. (Box Score)

UofL surrenders just four hits in 3-1 win over WKU

The University of Louisville scored single runs in the seventh an eighth innings to break open a 1-1 tie en route to a 3-1 win over Western Kentucky University. UofL took the lead in the seventh inning when freshman shortstop Alex Chittenden singled home freshman pinch runner Adam Engel. The Cards added an insurance run in the eighth inning when freshman center fielder Cole Sturgeon scored on a sacrifice fly from junior second baseman Ryan Wright. UofL junior right-handed pitcher Derek Self earned the win after pitching one and one-third scoreless innings, and junior right-handed pitcher Tony Zych earned his seventh save after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

WKU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when sophomore first baseman Ryan Huck singled home junior right fielder Ryan Hutchinson. WKU Sophomore right-handed pitcher Taylor Haydel took the loss after surrendering two runs in two innings of relief. Junior right-handed pitcher Phil Wetherell surrendered one run on two hits in four innings while striking out five batters and walking none in his first start of the season. WKU junior left fielder Jared Andreoli was the only Hilltopper with multiple hits and finished the game 2-5. UofL freshman third baseman Ty Young was 2-4 with a run scored, and Chittenden was 2-3 with one RBI. (Box Score)

  • The University of Louisville secured a series win over preseason MAC favorite Kent State with a 5-3 win Saturday behind redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher Justin Amlung. In seven innings Amlung surrendered one run on one hit to go with four strikeouts and one walk. Freshman designated hitter Ty Young was 3-4. Sophomore third baseman Cade Stallings drove in two runs for the Cards, and freshman first baseman Ryan Seiz scored twice. Junior right-handed closer Tony Zych earned his fourth save of the season despite surrendering one run after surrendering a hit and walking two batters in the ninth inning. (Box Score)
  • Western Kentucky University ended a four-game losing streak in impressive fashion with a 17-1 blowout win over New York Tech in its second game of the College of Charleston Tournament. WKU freshman right-handed pitcher Justin Hageman earned the win after surrendering one run on seven hits in six innings while striking out seven batters and walking one. At the plate junior left fielder Jared Andreoli was 4-4 with five RBI, three runs scored, two walks and one stolen base. Junior center fielder Kes Carter and senior catcher Matt Rice both slugged home runs in the game.   • In its third game of the College of Charleston Tournament WKU scored five runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at six but Auburn scored four runs in the top of the sixth to send WKU to a 13-8 loss. Junior right-handed reliever Phil Wetherell took the loss after surrendering five runs on six hits in three innings of work. Junior third baseman Casey Dykes was 3-5 with one RBI and two runs scored, and senior designated hitter Chris Bullard drove in three runs. (Box Score)
  • The University of Kentucky surrendered six runs in the seventh inning en route to dropping its second game of the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park with an 8-5 loss to Houston. UK junior right-handed pitcher Alex Meyer pitched well through six innings but left the game with two outs and a runner on first base after surrendering two runs already in the inning. Freshman left-handed pitcher Corey Littrell failed to record an out in the frame and surrendered three runs on two hits and one walk. Meyer took the loss after surrendering four runs on five hits in six and two-third innings while striking out six batters and walking three. At the plate UK junior outfielder Chad Wright was 2-3 with one RBI and one run scored, and sophomore catcher Luke Maile slugged a two-run home run in the fourth inning. (Box Score)
  • The Eastern Kentucky University offense was no match for Memphis in a 11-2 loss in the Memphis College Classic. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Anthony Bazzani took the loss after surrendering eight runs on six hits in two and two-third innings while striking out three and walking one. No EKU batter recorded multiple hits in the game. Freshman catcher Steve Ferraro and senior first baseman Bryce Labhart scored the team’s only runs. (Box Score)
  • Murray State University‘s double-header versus North Dakota St. was rained out Saturday. The two teams will make up one of the games as part of a double-header on Sunday that will begin at noon (CT).
  • Morehead State University fell to 1-9 on the season with a 13-4 loss to Bradley in game two of the University of Tennessee Tournament. Morehead St. senior right-handed pitcher Trey Smith took the loss after surrendering seven runs, three of which were earned, on six hits in four and two-third innings. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Cody Gibson continued his poor start to the 2011 season after surrendering five runs in two innings of relief.   • The University of Louisville appeared to be on its way to its third loss in four games but scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings before senior catcher J. J. Ethel drove home the winning run with a RBI-double in the 11th inning. Freshman infielder Ty Young singled with one out in the ninth inning then moved to second base when Ethel was hit by a pitch. Freshman pinch hitter Ryan Seiz drove home the first run of the inning on a single, and senior left fielder Drew Haynes drove home the tying run with a ground out. In the 11th inning Ethel doubled home Young to give UofL the win. Junior right-handed pitcher Derek Self earned the win after surrendering one run in three innings, and sophomore starting pitcher Matt Koch took a no decision despite surrendering just one run on five hits in eight innings.   • Western Kentucky University dropped its fourth straight game after starting the season 5-0 with a 7-5 loss to College of Charleston in the first game of the school’s invitational tournament. WKU sophomore left-handed pitcher Tanner Perkins suffered his first loss of the season after surrendering seven runs, four of which were earned, on eight hits in four and one-third innings while striking out three batters and walking none. Five different Hilltoppers’ batters tallied two hits in the game with sophomore shortstop Logan Robbins leading the offensive attack.   • A late rally from the University of Kentucky fell just short in an 8-7 loss to No. 21 Rice in the opening game of the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park. The Cats trailed by three runs entering the eighth inning but scored twice in the frame on a wild pitch and sacrifice fly from sophomore catcher Luke Maile. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Taylor Rogers took the loss after surrendering six runs on 10 hits in five and two-third innings while striking out three batters and walking one. At the plate junior third baseman Thomas McCarthy led UK with a 3-5 performance. Junior first baseman Braden Kapteyn slugged his second home run of the season and drove in two runs. (Box Score)
  • Eastern Kentucky University‘s opening game in the Memphis Baseball Classic was rained out.
  • Highlighted by a six-hit, seven-RBI game from senior left fielder Zach Noonan, the Murray State University offense exploded for a 17-7 blowout win over North Dakota State. Noonan finished the game 6-6 with one home run, seven RBI and four runs scored. Junior left-handed pitcher Luke Shuemaker was credited with the win after surrendering six runs on 12 hits in six innings. Shuemaker struck out seven batters and walked one. Junior second baseman Travis Isaak homered and both redshirt freshman designated hitter Ty Stetson and senior center fielder Elliot Frey each drove in three runs. Stetson finished the game 3-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. (Box Score)
  • Behind Lexington native Chad Martin Indiana sent Morehead State University to a 6-5 loss in 13 innings. Martin, a PLD alum, took a no decision but surrendered just three unearned runs on five hits in six innings while striking out six batters and walking three. Morehead St. redshirt junior starting pitcher Josh Schneider also pitched well in a no decision, surrendering three runs, one of which was earned, on four hits in seven innings while striking out four batters and walking one. At the plate junior center fielder Andrew Deeds was 2-4 with one double, one triple and one run scored to lead the Eagles.
